A birthday is a very special time in a kids life.  It is the day they look forward too all year, keep all their wishes for and is generally one of the best days of the year for them.  It is the day they have all their friends round at their party.  It’s the day they get a stack of brand new toys that they have wanted for a long time.  It’s a day where they are free to stuff their face with as much fizzy drink and sugary sweets they can.  The centrepiece of the whole birthday however is the children’s birthday cake.  This symbolises the birthday for them and is a powerful piece of imagery when thinking of birthday celebrations.  The candles on the cake represent the years of their life so far, their life achievements summed up.

For kids, the taste is not that important.  To most kids, cake is cake, it all tastes sweet.  What kids feel is important is the shape of the cake.  Perhaps it’s a racing car, made in their favourite colours.  Perhaps it’ll be in the shape of their favourite doll.  This is what kids remember about their birthday cakes, the shape and indeed the colour.  The colour is important too.  It should be very brightly coloured in order to attract the attention of you child and all their friends.  Kids associate fun with bright colours.  A lot of kid’s toys are bright and your children’s birthday cake should be no different.

Themed birthday cakes are very popular.  There are many themes out there but when you are put on the spot trying to decide what which of the many children’s birthday cakes you want to have for your own little one, it is not always easy to come up with, here are a few suggestions that may help you.  First of all, we have general themes:

Pirates or Princess

Pirate cakes are popular at the moment with the recent films Pirates of the Caribbean.  You could have a pirate ship, a treasure chest, perhaps a rectangular cake with a map put on it with cake decoration.  Maybe a pirates head, or even just a pirate hat. 

For your little princes you could have a fairytale castle, a horse and carriage, perhaps a 4 poster bed with sleeping beauty.  You could even have a cake shaped like a glass slipper to tie in with Cinderella.  The possabilities are only limited by your imagination.

Sports for him and her

Sports is a popular theme for boys and girls, depending on what sports they are into, you could have a stadium cake, a football pitch cake, a sports ball like a foot ball, basket ball, bowling ball etc shaped cake.  You may want a hockey stick shaped cake, or even a rugby ball.  You could have skateboard shaped cakes, BMX shaped cakes, even a horse stables, or horse racing cake.
