You can easily pick up a cake decorating set from your local supermarket, a local specialist cake decorating store or now, even over the internet.  You can then  use the contents to decorate the cake in your chosen style.  They usually come with some disposable icing bags, and a selection of tips to squeeze the icing through.  This will allow you to create different styles of icing lines, be it solid or with patterns.  They will also come with various colours of dyes to allow you to colour your icing to a more appropriate colour for your theme.  They may also come with varying shapes of spatulas and shaping tools to allow you to get the exact shapes you need.  Even more impressivly, some even come with a detailed book, describing how to use each and every tool found in the kit effectivley and even a few inspirational ideas.  All you need to do is apply as in structed, then pick the best birthday cake toppers and voila, your perfect birthday cake, customized to your theme, and for a reasonable price.

They are a superb way to finish off even a very complicated and detailed cake.  Be it birthday cake toppers for a birthday cake, or even cake toppers for a £500 wedding cake, they really set off the mood and finish off a theme perfectly.  I recently got married and our wedding cake was fairly modern.  It was 3 tiered, with each tier being shaped like a serperate cushion.  The cake was shaped like a stack of cushions and on the top, had a couple of bears, dressed like myself and my beautiful bride.  A small male bear with a kilt on, in the same tartin as me, and a smaller female bear with makeup on and a similar wedding dress.  They cake was perfect, and exactly what we wanted.
